The United Nations Relief and Works Agency, UNRWA, with the support of the Government of the United States of America, has inaugurated a new health centre in Wehdat, Jordan, a project worth nearly US$ 2 million.

The Amman New Camp health centre inaugurated today provides health care services to approximately 145,000 beneficiaries living in Wehdat (Amman New Camp) and the surrounding area. The new health centre has a broad range of community medicine and other care services.

At the inauguration, Ms. Kelly T. Clements, United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State said: “This project will contribute to the sustainable human development of Palestine refugees in Amman New Camp and the surrounding areas, by improving their access to primary health services. It is part of a larger initiative to improve significantly the delivery of health services to Palestine refugees.”

The centre serves over 9,000 infants and children below three years of age, 1,300 pregnant women, 3,000 family planning users and over 4,000 patients suffering from non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. The utilisation of the health centre is high with an average of 100 daily medical consultations per doctor.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, UNRWA Commissioner-General, Filippo Grandi, said: “The new health centre will contribute greatly to the wellbeing of the society we serve. It has a broad range of community health facilities, including a cardiology unit, dental care units, outpatient services, care for patients with non-communicable diseases, laboratory services, mother and child health care and school health activities.”

The new health centre will enhance the quality of care provided by UNRWA in Wehdat and ensure a smooth delivery of service by implementing a proper patient flow mechanism therefore contributing to sustainable human development of registered Palestine refugees.
