Salman is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees’ (UNRWA) Warehouse and Distribution Officer and responsible for the distribution of food to nearly 144,000 people in the West Bank.
Salman and his team are one example of the hundreds of men and women who make up the backbone of the Agency, working behind the scenes to make sure UNRWA operations run smoothly. Take Salman’s distribution teams in Nabus, Jerusalem, and areas in Hebron. Together, they distribute food to 875 beneficiaries. In 2011 alone, Salman’s team delivered a total of 5,890 tons of flour, rice, sugar and dry milk to UNRWA beneficiaries in the West Bank. These are only a few examples of the many ways the Procurement and Logistics Department assists with UNRWA operations.
Delivering services to vulnerable communities
“My first priority is to implement the schedule for the distribution of basic commodities under the special hardship cases in time and in an efficient manner. Our main goal is to serve our beneficiaries efficiently. This is the most important thing,” Tony explains.
The Procurement and Logistics Department at UNRWA supports the operations of the agency by maintaining and managing UNRWA warehouses, clearing customs and distributing food. Stephen Gibson, the Procurement and Logistics Officer explain his department’s work in a nutshell:
If we support the operations of the Agency, we are supporting Palestine refugees. If we work smart, we become more efficient. The most important reason why we come to work is to help Palestinians realize their full human potential. Our Department helps realize this goal for the Agency. This is fundamental.
The department abides by three common values: accountability, commitment and integrity. “By being accountable for our actions and working with commitment and integrity, we can be seen as acting for the Refugees best interests”, he added.
