Syria crisis situation update (Issue 47)

UNRWA continues to respond to the needs of Palestine refugees in Syria, distributing 1.1bn Syrian Pounds of cash assistance to 401,000 beneficiaries. The Agency operates in an increasingly challenging operational environment where armed conflict and threats to the lives and safety of UNRWA staff and refugees are commonplace. The number of refugees who have fled Syria to neighbouring Lebanon and Jordan also continues to rise.

The United States supports UNRWA’s Emergency Work With Palestine Refugees from Syria

U.S. Secretary of State today announced a new contribution of USD 8.4 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, UNRWA, for the Agency’s programmes assisting refugees in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. The funds will help UNRWA respond to the critical needs of Palestine refugees affected or displaced by the Syrian conflict.


UNRWA condemns mass displacement of Palestine refugees in Syria

Palestine refugees in Syria are being killed, injured and displaced in greater numbers than ever before, as the armed conflict continues to overwhelm refugee camps across the country. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) now estimates that approximately 235,000 Palestine refugees have been displaced inside Syria and is particularly concerned about news that was confirmed today on the displacement of some 6,000 Palestinians from Ein El Tal on 26 April, a Palestine refugee camp some 12 kilometres from Aleppo in northern Syria.

Mohammad is one of thousands of Palestine refugees who fled al-Taddamun neighbourhood around Yarmouk in Syria when the fighting escalated there last December. He took refuge in UNRWA's Tireh Girls’ School in Dummar, which the Agency has converted into a shelter for internally displaced people.


Kuwait gives UNRWA $15 million for Palestinian refugees in Syria

Kuwait has given UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) $15 million of its overall pledge of $300 million to the UN to help the organization meet the overwhelming humanitarian needs generated by the crisis in Syria.

The humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire and continues to deteriorate, particularly in the areas of Damascus/Rif Damascus, Aleppo and Dera’a. Armed conflict has resulted in a rising death toll, displacement and compounded humanitarian needs. UNRWA reopens its installations in Gaza

Based on the assurances UNRWA in Gaza received from different local parties, the Agency will reopen its installations across the Gaza Strip effective today, Tuesday 9 April. UNRWA was forced to close its distribution and relief offices last week due to ongoing demonstrations that affected its operations, a regrettable decision that hindered the Agency’s ability to provide much needed services and relief supplies to Palestine refugees in Gaza.
